What
Anyone who helps to look after someone with an illness, disability, ill mental health or an addiction, or who needs additional support for another reason is a carer. This could be for a parent, sibling, friend, or another relative. Maybe you help by staying at home to be there for them, helping them get washed or dressed, perhaps translating and interpreting for them, or doing lots of cleaning, shopping and cooking.
If this sounds like you, then you are a young carer. It may seem a strange way to describe yourself because looking after someone in your family may feel like a natural role.
Being a young carer is an important and selfless job. Many young carers find it rewarding and learn skills from what they do. But it can also get in the way of school, social life and even health.
Westminster City Council and Young Westminster Foundation have joined forces with DreamArts to help provide services and support for young carers. Together, they have created a Young Carers Pathway to help you find out what support and services are available to you locally as a young person with caring responsibilities. To enrol onto the Young Carers Pathway, you will need a Young Carers Assessment. Don't worry! It's not a test - it helps us understand more about your caring role so we can give you the best support. To get an assessment, you should speak to your school, visit a local family hub, or contact the Young Carers Navigator on 07542 224728 or duncan@dreamarts.org.uk.
The Young Carers Pathway is jam-packed full of trusted organisations offering free activities, lots of opportunities, and whole family support. From peer support groups, 1:1 therapy, and wellbeing workshops - each activity will help you in your caring role.
