What
Doorstep Library is a community-focused reading charity dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children aged 0-11 across London who need our support.
We recruit and train reading volunteers to visit families in pairs to run reading sessions every week in term-time. Our unique home-based service enables us to find the most appropriate books for every child we visit and build a relationship with the whole family. We use books to fuel children’s natural love of stories, fire their imaginations, and encourage their appreciation of reading. Our reading services are completely FREE for families.
We offer:
- Home reading sessions for families with children aged 0-11:
These are 20-minute sessions, taking place in your home or on the doorstep where children can read with two trained volunteers, once a week, during term time, between 5pm – 6:30pm. We are in the Worlds End estate area on a Thursday. - Encouragement for parents/carers to join our sessions and to continue to read with children after we’re gone because we know that sharing stories together improves child-parent bonds, which in turn enriches family life, leads to better literacy and enhanced life opportunities.
- A completely free, child-led and flexible service. There are no costs or fines for books which are lost or damaged. There is no commitment – families can choose to have a visit or not each week.
