theCOLAB The Artist's Garden
About Organisation
theCOLAB is a women-led registered arts charity. We are a collaborative laboratory that brings together people, land and art by commissioning artworks in unusual, often outdoor, spaces. We believe that everyone should have access to life-affirming art without barriers. In 2021, we founded The Artist’s Garden, which transformed the neglected half acre rooftop on Temple tube station in Westminster into the world’s first free sculpture garden dedicated to the work of women artists. It is an expansive plinth, where women artists are nurtured over time and make or exhibit their first, early or greatest outdoor sculptural intervention. The annual programme includes commissions, exhibitions and residencies of all scales and annually hosts theCOLAB/ Royal College of Art/Yorkshire Sculpture Park Graduate Award residency. theCOLAB’s work is in pursuit of revealing the rarely seen – only 13% of public sculptures in London are by women artists and they have a mere 23% representation in galleries and public collections. This bold creative output is underpinned by inspiring and innovative educational outreach programmes and residencies for Westminster-based young people and those underrepresented in the arts to broaden their accessibility to, and representation within, the creative industries in partnership with Westminster Council’s City Lions programme.
