Doorstep Library
About Organisation
Doorstep Library is a community-focused literacy charity dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children aged 0-11 across London who need our support. We recruit and train reading volunteers to visit families in pairs online or in person to run weekly reading sessions during term-time. Our unique home-based service enables us to find the most appropriate books for every child we visit and build relationships with the whole family. We use books to fuel children’s natural love of stories, fire their imaginations, and encourage their appreciation of reading. Online reading visits enable us to now reach children remotely, as well as in-person sessions around the Kensington & Chelsea borough, for families based in local estates.
- Visits take place on a set evening on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm
- We currently work across the following areas in Kensington & Chelsea: Lancaster West Estate (on Tuesdays) and World's End Estate (on Thursdays). We also offer online reading sessions to those in both Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster boroughs.
- We can continue weekly visits for up to 12 months. We also offer sessions to families based in Westminster and are able to offer our Online Reading Corner to families throughout London.
- No costs or fines for books which are lost or damaged, and no costs or charges for any books posted as part of our Online service.
- Our reading services are completely FREE for families.
If you would like to refer a family who lives outside these areas, please get in touch. We might still be able to offer online reading sessions.
